Safari Zones & Entry Gates in Kuno National Park

Kuno National Park currently offers safari access through three tourism zones, each providing a unique landscape and wildlife experience.

These are:

Ahera Gate

Tiktoli Gate

Peepalbawri Gate

Although all three gates provide access to Kuno's wilderness, the safari experience differs considerably depending on the zone you choose. Factors such as road connectivity, terrain, wildlife movement, accommodation availability and safari vehicle options can all influence your overall experience. If you're visiting Kuno for the first time, selecting the right gate can significantly improve both your comfort and your chances of memorable wildlife sightings.

1. Ahera Gate – Our Top Recommendation ⭐

If someone asks our team which safari gate they should choose, our answer is almost always Ahera Gate. Located on the Pohri side of Kuno National Park, Ahera offers the best overall combination of wildlife sightings, road connectivity and visitor convenience. It is the closest gate for most travellers arriving from Gwalior Airport, Shivpuri Railway Station and Gwalior Junction, making it the easiest gate to reach.

Over the past two tourism seasons, our team has spent hundreds of days tracking wildlife in this zone. Based on our field experience, Ahera has consistently produced the highest number of cheetah and leopard sightings among the three tourism gates.

The zone includes a mix of open grasslands, dry deciduous forests and riverine patches, creating excellent habitat for cheetahs, leopards, sloth bears, deer and numerous bird species.

Another major advantage is flexibility. Unlike Tiktoli, visitors entering through Ahera can currently choose between a registered safari Gypsy or an eligible private vehicle, subject to Forest Department rules. (bandhavgarh)

Tiktoli Gate

Tiktoli was one of the original tourism gates developed for Kuno National Park and offers visitors a completely different safari experience. The landscape here consists of beautiful forests, rolling hills and open woodland, making it a wonderful area for exploring Kuno's natural beauty. Visitors frequently encounter deer, nilgai, wild boar, jackals, hyenas and a rich diversity of birds.

However, based on our team's experience during recent safari seasons, cheetah sightings in this zone have generally been less frequent than at Ahera. Leopard sightings are also comparatively lower, although wildlife movement can change over time as animals expand their territories.

Another important point is that only registered safari Gypsies are currently permitted from Tiktoli Gate, making advance vehicle arrangements essential. (The Times of India) Accommodation options around Tiktoli are also more limited compared to the Ahera side.

Peepalbawri Gate

Peepalbawri Gate provides access to another beautiful section of Kuno National Park. The route passes through rural villages and interior roads before reaching the safari gate. While the journey offers glimpses of the local countryside, road conditions can be rough in some stretches, particularly after the monsoon.

Compared to Ahera, tourism infrastructure around Peepalbawri is still developing. Visitors may find fewer accommodation options and limited availability of safari Gypsies near the gate. Many guests therefore arrange their vehicles in advance before arriving.

Because comparatively fewer tourists currently enter through this gate, there is less consistent visitor data regarding wildlife sightings. However, the landscapes are beautiful and the zone has good potential as tourism continues to develop.

Choose Ahera Gate if you're visiting Kuno for the first time, want the best road connectivity and are primarily hoping to see cheetahs or leopards.

Choose Tiktoli Gate if you're interested in exploring quieter forest landscapes and don't mind travelling in a registered Gypsy.

Choose Peepalbawri Gate if you're looking to experience a less-visited part of Kuno and are comfortable travelling through rural roads.
